Synopsis

Despite numerous advances in the field of medicine, the management of acute pain fails to be given appropriatepriority and acute pain is often not properly treated in avariety of clinical situations. Acute pain is defined hereas pain associated with actual or potential tissue damage, which is of recent onset and probable limited duration. Unlikechronic pain, which commonly persists beyond the time of healing, acute pain usually has an identifiable relationship to injury or disease.

The NHMRC has produced Acute Pain Management: Scientific Evidence, whichreviews the available scientific evidence and informationon this subject. Acute Pain Management: Information forGeneral Practitioners and Acute Pain Management: Information for Consumers are summaries, designed to allow quick reference and revision of the main principles.

General Practitioners are advised to consultthe main document for details on any section in this summary.
