Synopsis
The NHMRC Clinical Practice Guidelines: Prevention of Stroke: The role of anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents and carotid endarterectomy, are a continuation of a series of clinical practice guidelines being developed in Australia.
The primary objective of these and similar guidelines is to achieve better health outcomes by helping general practitioners and health professionals to improve their practice, and by better informing consumers about treatment options.
The guidelines draw on an evidence-based approach to best practice. They follow the methodology for developing guidelines recommended in another NHMRC Publication Guidelines for the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines.
They outline the evidence for different interventions and the economic implications of different options. They are not intended to be prescriptive, but provide information on risks and benefits of the various interventions. They focus particularly on:
- anticoagulation;
- antiplatelet therapy; and
- carotid enarterectomy.
