ADHD Clinical Practice Points

In mid 2011 NHMRC convened a multi-disciplinary Expert Working Group to develop Clinical Practice Points (CPP) on the diagnosis, assessment and management of ADHD in children and adolescents. The CPPs aim to assist health professionals in decision-making and coordination of care, particularly in regards to the use of stimulant medication in the pharmaceutical management of children and adolescents with ADHD.

The CPPs are based on the consensus of members of a working group on what constitutes good practice. They aim to provide succinct, simple and practical guidance that complements, not replaces, broader evidence-based guidance.

Status of the Draft Clinical Practice Points

It is anticipated that the final CPPs will be released in June 2012.

The draft CPPs have undergone a period of public consultation and 140 submissions were received. On 1 February 2012 the Expert Working Group met to consider these submissions. The next draft is currently being finalised based on the group’s deliberations.

The submissions received during public consultation will be made available at the time of publishing the final CPPs via NHMRC’s Public Consultations website.

The next draft will be considered by the Council of NHMRC (which comprises the State and Territory Chief Health and Medical Officers) and NHMRC’s CEO prior to finalisation.
