NHMRC Supported Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (5 years Europe / 4 years Australia)

Australia’s Associate Membership at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory commenced in March 2008.  A key aspect of the Associate Membership is the Faculty Development Program which provides for two Australian-supported Group Leader positions each with their own research group, at EMBL’s network of five basic research laboratories in Europe.  The Group Leaders are placed at EMBL in Europe for up to 5 years, followed by a further 4 years at an Australian institution.

NHMRC funding supports the placement of one Group Leader in Europe for a period of up to 5 years.  NHMRC support is contingent on the relevance of the successful candidate’s research to human health and prospects for academic and scientific engagement between EMBL and Australian researchers.

NHMRC’s funding of the position provides an opportunity for a researcher of outstanding ability to further their career at EMBL in Europe and develop into an internationally recognised research leader.  Following their term in Europe, the Group Leader continues at an Australian institution.

Applications for the NHMRC-supported Group Leader position closed on 21 November 2008. The initiative is now in the final interview stage,

It is anticipated that details of the successful appointment will be announced midway through 2009.
