Australian-European Union Health Research Grants

Program objectives

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) - European Union (EU) Collaborative Research Grants program aims to assist Australian researchers to participate in projects with international researchers that have been selected for funding under the Seventh Framework Programme of the European community for research and technology development (FP7).

Program Description

The Framework Programme is the EU's main instrument for funding research and development.  Framework Programmes have been implemented since 1984 and cover a five year period.  FP7 commenced on 1 January 2007 and will fund projects over a five year period.

More information on FP7 is available from the following websites:

NHMRC - European Union Research Program

The NHMRC has limited funds to assist Australian participation in projects selected for funding by the European Union under FP7 that are relevant to the NHMRC. Australian researchers must be part of the original application submitted to the European Union.

Projects involving Australian researches based in Australia that are chosen for funding, may be eligible for NHMRC support.  The following issues will be considered when assessing eligible projects:

  • value and quality of the Australian contribution to the European research; and
  • value added to Australian research from your participation.

The total NHMRC funds available under each call is AUD $1 million.

How to apply for Grant funding under this program

Responsibility for submitting proposals to the EU under the FP7 lies with the European partners.

Australian researches participating in projects being submitted to the EU must submit their application to the NHMRC as follows:

  • complete an NHMRC - European Union Health Research Grants application form; and
  • forward, with a copy of the final application submitted to the European Commission, to the NHMRC.

Application to the NHMRC must be submitted within two weeks of the European Commission closing date.
