Dementia Research Grants

The Dementia Research Grants will focus on the practical applications of dementia research to produce significant advances in knowledge of dementia prevention, treatment or care within the next three years.

The Department of Health and Ageing (the Department) has established a collaborative dementia research program with the National Heath and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The Department will provide $16 million to fund Dementia Research to inform policy development and to improve clinical practice and care. The research grants will be managed by the NHMRC.

It is anticipated that there will be two calls for research with up to $10 million for two or three year grants being available in Round 1. Grants of up to $1.5 million will be provided for 3 year grants and $1 million for 2 year grants. It is anticipated that round 2 will be advertised in late 2006.

The Dementia Research Grants will focus on the practical applications of dementia research to help improve care and support for people with dementia and their carers. Funding will be offered on the basis of merit of the proposals as assessed by an NHMRC Dementia Research Grant Review Panel.
