Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

Current estimates are that in 2003 at least 200, 000 Australian’s suffered from dementia (about 1% of the population). A new report, Dementia Estimates and Projections: Australian States and Territories, commissioned from Access Economics by Alzheimer’s Australia, estimates that nearly 1000 people will be diagnosed with dementia every week – and that by 2050, nearly 3% of the population (about 720,000 Australian’s) will suffer from dementia.

NHMRC funding on research into Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia’s has grown from less than $3 million for 37 research grants at the start of the current decade to just on $22 million for 106 active grants in 2009. Funding in 2009 increased by 24% from $17.8 million in 2008.
