Research Ethics Committee and Regulatory Approvals Clearance

Under the Funding Agreement and Deeds of Agreement, Administering Institutions must meet clearance requirements and maintain the necessary approvals for the duration of the Funding Period.

When advising the NHMRC that the research proposed in the application has been reviewed and approved by a human research, animal ethics, genetic manipulation or institutional biosafety committee, the proforma below must be used:

Human Research Ethics Committee Approval

In advising the NHMRC that a research proposal has been reviewed and approved by a human research ethics committee, the Administering Institution is to ensure that the human research ethics committee complies with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) in terms of Section 5.1 - (The committee's composition and the appointment of members, and the procedures it follows).

Animal Research Ethics Committee Approval

In advising the NHMRC that a research proposal has been reviewed and approved by an animal ethics committee, the Administering Institution is to ensure that the ethics committee complies with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes in terms of Section 2 - Responsibilities of institutions and their animal ethics committees.

Gene Technology Approval

In advising the NHMRC that a research proposal has been reviewed and approved by an institutional biosafety committee (IBC), the Administering Institution is to ensure that the IBC has been properly constituted under the Gene Technology Act 2000 and in accordance with the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator’s Guidelines for the Accreditation of an Organisation.

Requests for a partial release of funds before approval by ethics committees

Under the NHMRC Funding Rules, where an ethics clearance or regulatory approval is not required until the latter years of a grant and the relevant committee cannot review the proposal without the results of the preliminary findings of the research, then NHMRC approval can be sought for the funds to be released before the ethics clearance or regulatory approvals have been received. These requests will be considered by NHMRC on a case by case basis and are to be submitted by the Administering Institution to Postaward.management@nhmrc.gov.au.
