The major objective of reseach funded through this strategic award is to identify and reduce the impact of conditions occurring in adulthood which have their origins in the early stages of life. The award focuses on innovative research which has an interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach to child health.

Background
The A Healthy Start to Life for All Australians Strategic Award forms part of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC’s) response to the Australian Government’s National Research Priorities announced in December 2002. In particular, the award comes under the research priority area, Promoting and Maintaining Good Health and its priority goal A Healthy Start to Life. Funding up to $5 million over 5 years has been provided to support projects that may inform policy and programs related to detection, intervention and prevention in the areas of perinatal, postnatal, maternal, infant and child health. For the purposes of this Award, the time period of interest extends from conception to preadolescence.
Application Process
The Application Process will comprise two stages; a Call for Expressions of Interest and an Invitation to submit a full application.
Stage One – The Expression of Interest
The closing date for Expressions of Interest (EOI) is 5:00pm AEST 10 July 2006. The A Healthy Start to Life for All Australians Strategic Award Review Panel will consider the EOIs and short list those which will be invited to submit a full application.
Lodging an Expression of Interest
To lodge an expression of interest for an A Healthy Start to Life for All Australians Strategic Award:

Application ID number
Please obtain an application identification number from the Research Administration Officer (RAO) of your Administering Institution. Please insert this as a "header" on each page of your EOI form as this number will be used to track your Expression of Interest.
Stage Two – Full Applications
Only short-listed Expressions of Interest from Stage One will be eligible to submit a full application. Short-listed applicants will be notified individually via their Research Administration Officer and invited to submit a full application. Documentation for this will be forwarded to those eligible applicants.
For Stage Two, applicants will be asked to give a detailed account of the proposed research project. This may include supporting documentation outlining the commitment of all partners, whether cash, in-kind or other. Where applications include collaborations with researchers, consumers and service providers all parties will be required to confirm that they are aware of and willing to participate in the research projects. Applicants will also be required to submit an implementation plan which outlines how the research will translate into health policy or practice and how stakeholders, including consumers, will be informed about the research findings and outcomes.
