Mental Health

It is estimated that mental health problems and mental illness will affect more than 20% of the adult population in their lifetime and between 10-15% of young people in any one year. Many will recover spontaneously and, of the remainder, the vast majority can be treated and will fully recover. However, a smaller number of people will experience longer periods of distress and disability. Mental disorders accounted for more than 13% of the total burden of disease and injury in Australia in 2003 with anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse and personality disorders accounting for three quarters of that burden. Females were twice as likely to be anxious or depressed as males while men were three times more likely to contribute to the substance abuse burden than females.

The NHMRC has committed to spending more than $68 million on research related to mental health issues in 2009, up from $57 million in 2008.
