Cancer

88,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in Australia. One in three men and one in four women will develop cancer before the age of 75. In 2003 Cancer was responsible for 19% of the total burden of disease and injury in Australia, with lung, colon, breast and prostate cancers accounting for half of this burden. Other than the gender specific cancers (breast and gynaecological cancers in females and prostate cancer in males), men generally have a greater share of the burden from colon and lung cancer. According to the 2003 AIHW Burden of Disease in Australia report, 80% of the total cancer burden resulted in mortality and that the disease, a National Health Priority Area, is likely to remain the largest contributor to the health burden in Australia in the next 20 years.

NHMRC Funding on research into cancer and cancer control issues has grown from $28 million (284 active grants) at the start of the current decade to more than $154 million for more than 840 active research grants in 2009. Over the decade, more than $850 million has been expended on research by Australian researchers on the major disease area.
