Asthma

Chronic respiratory diseases were responsible for more than 7% of the burden of disease and injury in Australia in 2003 and asthma accounted for one in three cases. Asthma affects up to 12% of adults and up to 16% of children (particularly young boys). Although the rate of asthma related deaths in Australia has reduced since the 1980's, it still remains high compared to other developed countries. 314 people died as a result of Asthma in 2003. Asthma is recognised by the Australian Government as a health priority and a key issue to be addressed under the National Chronic Disease Strategy.

More than $19 million was expended by the NHMRC in 2008 on 131 active research grants likely to have some benefit for asthma sufferers (up from $16 million in 2007)
