Arthritis and Osteoporosis

Chronic conditions involving the bones and joints are the leading cause of chronic pain and disability in Australia and worldwide. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)'s report The Burden of Disease and Injury in Australia 2003, musculoskeletal diseases accounted for 4% of the total burden of disease and injury in Australia in 2003, with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis accounting for 75% of this burden. Osteoporosis, often the cause of falls and fractures (60% involving elderly females) is also a major health issue. Together these diseases are recognised by the Australian Government as National Health Priorities and key disease areas under the National Chronic Disease Strategy.

In 2009 NHMRC research funding expenditure for arthritis and osteoporosis was more than $30 million for 190 active research grants. More than $110 million has been invested in this priority area in the four years since 2006.
