Potential Avian Influenza-Induced Pandemic
Call for Urgent Research

Introduction

In late 2005, the NHMRC called for proposals for research to rapidly inform and advance Australian strategies to prevent, prepare for and respond to a potential avian influenza-induced pandemic.

A streamlined application and assessment process was used to enable research to commence as soon as possible in 2006.

Successful applications

The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Tony Abbott MP announced successful grants on 20 February 2006.

NIPAC Symposium

April 2005

The National Influenza Pandemic Action Committee (NIPAC) Pandemic Influenza Research Symposium, sponsored by the Department of Health and Ageing and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), was held in Melbourne on 27 April 2005. The purpose of the Symposium was to explore current influenza research capacity in Australia and internationally, identify gaps and discuss the development of a structured approach to fostering pandemic influenza research in Australia. It was attended by experts in both medical and social pandemic influenza research.
