International Human Frontier Science Program
Particular emphasis is placed on:
- bringing scientists together from a range of fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, bioinformatics, nanoscience and engineering together with biologists;
- supporting novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding complex biological systems; and
- supporting scientists early in their careers.
The current members (or “supporting countries”) are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus (EU part), the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Funding Opportunities
Research Grants
Young Investigators' Grants, for teams of researchers within the first five years after obtaining an independent laboratory.
Program Grants, for teams of independent researchers at any stage of their careers. The research team is expected to develop new lines of research through the collaboration.
Through the NHMRC membership of the HFSP Australian researchers are able to apply as Principal Applicants for Research Grants.
Deadlines:
Applications normally open in December each year and close at the end of March or beginning of April the following year. Once the call opens application forms can be downloaded from www.hfsp.org/.
Fellowships
Long-term Fellowships, research training in an outstanding laboratory in another country. (Annual scheme). Fellows who return to their home country are eligible to apply for a Career Development Award.
Cross Disciplinary Fellowships, These fellowships are intended for postdoctoral fellows with a PhD. degree in the physical sciences, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computer sciences who wish to receive training in biology. The conditions are the same as for the long-term Fellowships.
Deadlines:
Applications for both types of Fellowships normally open in June and close in August/September each year. Once the call opens application forms can be downloaded www.hfsp.org/.
Career Development Awards, Long-Term Fellows and Cross-Disciplinary Fellows who return to their home country at the end of the fellowship are eligible to apply for a Career Development Award.
Deadlines:
Applications normally open in June and close in November each year. Eligible HFSP Fellows receive information from the HFSP with plenty of time to apply for a Career Development Award.
Short-term Fellowships, allow researchers to move into new areas by learning state-of-the-art techniques.
Deadlines:
The Short-term Fellowships scheme is an open call and application forms can be downloaded from www.hfsp.org/.
Awardees Meeting
Each year the HFSP Organization holds an awardees meeting which provides all HFSP awardees with an opportunity to meet and discuss their work and make contacts.
