The Global Biodiversity Information Facility

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was established in 2001 to facilitate access to the world's supply of primary scientific data on biodiversity for policymakers, research scientists and the general public.

GBIF’s focus is on data about species and individual specimens representing those species, although links are also made to ecological and genetic data. Australia is a financial member of GBIF, one of 25 voting participants, and a member of the Governing Board.
