Postgraduate Scholarships

The aim of the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships scheme is to support outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and to develop a capacity for original independent research. This is usually achieved by NHMRC funding its scholars to attain a PhD, a PhD equivalent degree or Masters degree, all of which must be by full-time research.

Changes from the 2009 Application Year

  • There are no changes to the Funding Policy for the Postgraduate Scholarships scheme since last year, but see Part-time Applications.
  • There is a change in the way in which applications are submitted. Applications this year will be submitted through the Research Grants Management System (RGMS) which is a web-based on-line system developed for all NHMRC initiatives. Review the documentation provided on this page for guidance on how to access RGMS.
  • You no longer need to obtain an Application ID number in advance of preparing your application. An Application ID will be automatically generated by RGMS when you commence an application.

Part-time Applications

Applicants in the past could only apply for NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships if they were proposing to undertake full time studies. Representations have been made to NHMRC to consider allowing part-time study in a limited range of circumstances for applicants undertaking combined PhD and postgraduate medical degrees.

If agreed, the Funding Policy will be adjusted reflect the necessary changes, and potential applicants who may be affected should monitor this web page for further information. Any changes that may occur will be put in place before May 31st. This will provide sufficient time for applications to be prepared by the July 30th closing date.

After consideration of what would be required, it has been found that it will not be possible to implement the necessary amendments to the Scholarships scheme for the current application round.
