Research Fellowships
NHMRC Research Fellowships provide support for experienced researchers to undertake research that is of major importance in its field and of significant benefit to Australian health and medical research.
Applying for funding
The NHMRC’s Research Grants Management System (RGMS) must be used to access/enter your CV and Profile, and submit your Research Fellowship application.
Applicants who are not yet registered in RGMS should contact the Research Help Centre at help@nhmrc.gov.au for more information.
A complete Research Fellowship application consists of:
- Parts A and B of the application form
- The relevant information in your RGMS Profile and CV
- The uploaded PDF document containing your Proposed Research (uploaded to Part B:Propsed Research)
- The uploaded PDF document containing your Supervision and Mentoring (uploaded to Part B: Research Supervision and Mentoring)
- If required, the uploaded PDF document containing your Exceptional Circumstances (uploaded to Part B: Initial Application PRF/SPRF) for Initial Applications at PRF or SPRF only.
Prior to submission, applicants are to ensure they:
- Read all relevant reference material; and
- Liaise with their Administering Institution to identify any specific requirements that the institution may have.

- Applications close: 17:00hrs (5pm) AEDST, 9 February 2012

Applying for a One Year Extension for Retiring Fellows
Current NHMRC Fellows, who are nearing retirement and intend to remain research active, may apply for a one year extension of their Research Fellowship. Fellows will not be required to complete a full reapplication for a new five year award nor attend an interview.
Current Fellows who wish to apply for a one year extension of their Fellowship, should email the NHMRC through their institution’s Administration Office, by the closing date for Research Fellowship applications, to: research.fellowships@nhmrc.gov.au. Fellows must attach their signed statement, letter of intent and CV. Applicants should refer to the Research Fellowships Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2013 for further details.

Practitioner Fellowships
NHMRC Practitioner Fellowships provide support for active clinicians and public health or health services professionals to undertake research that is linked to their practice or policy.
Applying for Funding
The NHMRC’s Research Grants Management System (RGMS) must be used to access/enter your CV and Profile, and submit your Practitioner Fellowship application.
Applicants who are not yet registered in RGMS should contact the Research Help Centre on help@nhmrc.gov.au for more information.
A complete Practitioner Fellowship application consists of:
- Parts A and B of the application form
- The relevant information in your RGMS Profile and CV
- The uploaded PDF document containing your Proposed Research (uploaded to Part B:Propsed Research)
- The uploaded PDF document containing your Supervision and Mentoring (uploaded to Part B: Research Supervision and Mentoring)
- The uploaded PDF Confirmation Letters in relation to Clinical/Public Health status and employment positions (uploaded to Part B: Funding Partner/Employers).
Note: Application for Practitioner Fellowships which are submitted without Confirmation Letters, will be deemed ineligible.

Australia Fellowships
The Australia Fellowship was a one-off funding scheme proposed by the government in 2006. A pre-eminent award in health and medical research, successful Fellows have leading international status in their field and are now conducting research programs of major impact and benefit to Australia.
After five rounds and the awarding of 39 Australia Fellowships, applications are no longer accepted for this scheme.
