Carry Forward of Unspent Funding - Project Grants

The average Project Grant is funded for three years, however Project Grant funding may be awarded anywhere between one and five years. In most instances research is due to commence in January of the year which funding is awarded and conclude in December of the third or final (for tenure other than three years) year.

Carry forward of unspent monies in any funding year shall be notified in the Annual Financial Statement by 31 March of the following year.
  • Where the unspent funds are greater than 25% of the annual budget justification is required. The justification should be attached to and submitted with the completed financial statement.
  • If the justification for carry forward of unspent funds is unacceptable the NHMRC may seek further clarification otherwise the carry forward will be approved.

In the final year of a funded project where there is a carry forward of funds the Institution must advise the NHMRC of the approximate amount by 31 December of that year.
NOTE: The procedure for Funded projects in their final year includes funded projects of one year tenure.

  • When a request is received for carry forward of funding in the final year of research for a Project Grant the NHMRC will advise the requesting Institution of the outcome of that request. If the outcome is favourable the Institution will be notified of the revised end date and an additional SR&E will be due confirming the actual carry forward amount. The final Acquittance for the total amount of funding will be due six months after the revised end date.
