Northern Australia Tropical Disease Collaborative Research Programme

The Northern Australia Tropical Disease Collaborative Research Programme (the Programme) will support innovative high quality teams to undertake research into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tropical disease that translate research findings into outcomes for health in Australia and the region.  The Programme will build strong collaborations, new research capability and capacity in the health and medical research workforce, and promote effective translation of this research into health policy and practice.

This investment is part of a broader Government strategy to build Australia’s primary research capacity and support the development of Northern Australia as outlined in the White Paper on Developing Northern Australia , released on 18 June 2015.

Funded through the NHMRC under the ongoing direction of a Scientific Advisory Panel, the Programme will be a geographically diverse network linking across more than one institution. A physical presence in Northern Australia is expected for significant components of the team.

Separate Funding available from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The NHMRC has established a separate arrangement with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for a combined application and assessment process that will enable applicants to apply for separate funding from DFAT under the Tropical Disease Research Regional Collaboration Initiative.

This initiative, part of the White Paper on Developing Northern Australia suite of tropical health measures, aims to strengthen collaboration between Australian research institutions working in tropical health with world class international and regional health research institutions and regional partners. The DFAT initiative is intended to complement the objectives of the NHMRC Northern Australia Tropical Disease Collaborative Research Programme.

Applicants must select DFAT on their application form to indicate that the application is to be forwarded to DFAT for consideration of separate funding. NHMRC is unable to forward the application to DFAT without the applicant’s permission.  NOTE:  Applicants can seek funding from both NHMRC and DFAT on the same application form.

These applications will be peer reviewed by NHMRC and outcomes of the assessment process provided to DFAT for funding decision for the Tropical Disease Research Regional Collaboration Initiative.

For more information on how to apply for funding from DFAT, applicants should refer to the DFAT website and to the Northern Australia Tropical Disease Collaborative Research Programme Funding Rules.
