Dementia Research Grants

The Dementia Research Grants Program aims to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers through research into identified gaps in applied and translational dementia research. The program aims to achieve this through the establishment of multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research programs and by supporting areas of dementia research that focus on practical applications of evidence based research.

Background

In August 2005, the Australian Government announced the Federal Budget initiative Helping Australians with dementia and their carers - making dementia a National Health Priority.  This initiative consisted of funding of $320.6 million over five years to enhance dementia research, primary care and early intervention opportunities relating to dementia. 

The Department of Health and Ageing has established a collaborative dementia research program with the NHMRC. The Department will provide $16 million to fund dementia research to inform policy development and improve clinical practice as part of the Helping Australians with dementia and their carers- making dementia a National Health Priority initiative. The research grants will be managed by the NHMRC.

A total of up to $11.5 million is available for two or three year grants in Round 2. Grants of up to $1.5 million will be provided for 3 year grants and $1 million for 2 year grants.

The Dementia Research Grants will focus on the practical applications of dementia research to help improve care and support for people with dementia and their carers. Funding will be offered on the basis of merit of the proposals as assessed by an NHMRC Dementia Research Grant Review Panel.

Application Process

The call for research under the second round of the Dementia Research Grants program was advertised on 9 December 2006.

Applications for funding under Round 2 will close on 23 February 2007.
