NICS Fellowships
Introduction
The National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) is an institute of the NHMRC and works to improve health care by getting health and medical research into practice.
As part of this work, NICS Fellowships offer a unique opportunity to talented early to mid-career health professionals to be trained in the science of evidence implementation. Rather than undertake research to find new knowledge, NICS Fellows develop programs to apply current knowledge, which although already available, is not being used in routine care.
In this way, NICS Fellows bridge important evidence-practice gaps which add value to the work of others and deliver tangible improvements in patient care.
NICS Fellowships are producing a community of Australian health care leaders who have the expertise and willingness to support other health professionals overcome the barriers to applying research evidence. This ensures the knowledge and skills acquired extend well beyond the program’s duration.

Diversity and knowledge sharing
NICS Fellows receive a two year, half time stipend, training and mentoring. They gain access to both local and international experts in evidence implementation. Eighteen NICS Fellowships have been awarded since 2003 to a diverse range of health professionals representing general practice, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, paramedicine, geriatrics, pharmacy, radiology and palliative care.

Sponsorships
NICS partners with other health care organisations such as colleges, condition specific groups, government departments and agencies and who share our goal in improving health care through the uptake of evidence.
We work closely with sponsors to identify evidence-practice gaps within their speciality. Co-sponsoring not only addresses these gaps through an evidence implementation project. It also ensures that the leadership skills developed by our Fellows will continue to make a significant impact in an area important to the sponsors well beyond the life of an individual fellowship.
