Strategic Research Development Committee (SRDC)
History
The Strategic Research Development Committee was a Principal Committee of the NHMRC during the 1997-2000 and 2000-2003 trienniums. The information provided in this area of the site is for historical reference only. Dr John (Jack) Best was Chairman.
Following extensive consultation and workshops with Council and members of the NHMRC’s Research Committee (RC) and Strategic Research Development Committee (SRDC), research organisations and individual researchers, the Council recommended one Principal Committee of NHMRC for Research. The Minister agreed to Council’s recommendation.
The new Research Committee will focus on consolidation of the achievements of the RC and SRDC and from the individual researcher’s perspective there will be negligible change in current funding schemes.
Role of SRDC
The SRDC used to identify important areas in Australian health care, where research was currently under-developed, or where there are gaps in the current effort. Specifically, the SRDC was responsible for:
- defining a research, and research training, agenda based on identified gaps in knowledge and skills;
- enhancing the national research capacity, skills and institutional capability to respond in a focused and timely fashion to emerging health research needs;
- developing the national capacity to identify, target, generate and link research-based knowledge which is applicable to programs, policies and interventions; and
- fostering the ability to evaluate the application of research-based knowledge to programs, policies and interventions in medicine and public health.
