Cellular Therapies Advisory Committee (CTAC)
On this page
Introduction
The Cellular Therapies Advisory Committee (CTAC) was established in November 2007 to provide the NHMRC with scientific, medical and technical advice on cellular therapies. CTAC can provide advice through the NHMRC to Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) during the review of clinical research proposals involving high-risk novel cellular therapies and regenerative medicine.
CTAC is comprised of experts in a range of fields and is available to provide advice on a range of emerging clinical research areas such as:
- Gene and related therapies, including the introduction of DNA or RNA into the somatic cells of humans (including oligonucleotides, DNA vaccines and siRNA molecules) and the introduction of cells into humans where the cells have had their genetic material modified; and
- Stem cell-based cellular therapies, including embryonic and adult stem cells (especially where the cells have been highly manipulated or where they are to be implanted for a purpose that is not their usual biological function).
Terms of reference
- Provide independent and timely expert advice to the CEO and Council on scientific, medical and technical issues related to high-risk cellular therapies and regenerative medicine (including stem cells, gene and related therapies, and xenotransplantation).
- Provide scientific, medical and technical advice at the request of Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) during the review of clinical research proposals involving high-risk cellular therapies.
