Formerly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Forum

This section of the site contains a range of information about the functions and composition of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Research Advisory Committee.

The NHMRC Forum was established by Council during the 2003-2005 triennium to provide strategic advice to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and improve the effectiveness of NHMRC's response to Indigenous health issues.  In addition to the Forum, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Working Committee provided high level policy and operational advice on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and research activities of the NHMRC.

The work of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Working Committee has now been incorporated into the new Advisory Committee. The new committee will provide strategic advice to the CEO and improve the effectiveness of NHMRC's response to Indigenous health issues by:

  • Improving coordination and integration of NHMRC's activities relating to Indigenous health and research;
  • Identifying and advising on emerging issues, risks and gaps in Indigenous health for consideration by the CEO and monitoring the implementation of NHMRC's Indigenous health strategies;
  • Providing advice on the NHMRC's contribution to the development of national and international strategies for improving Indigenous health and building capabilities;
  • Evaluating the implementation of the NHMRC Road Map: A Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research;
  • Supporting the development of effective internal and external stakeholder relationships and increasing community involvement in the NHMRC's Indigenous health agenda, thereby promoting the activities and achievements of the NHMRC in Indigenous health;
  • Providing advice to the CEO on the commitment to spend at least 5% of the Medical Research Endowment Account on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research and ensure that outcomes of funded research are evaluated and monitored;
  • Supporting the implementation of Values and Ethics: Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research; Keeping Research on Track: a guide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples about health research ethics; National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research: and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research in relation to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
