Functions
HCC is one of the NHMRC’s two new Principal Committees for the 2009-12 triennium. It was established to provide advice to Council on a range of clinical matters in hospital and primary care settings.
The Committee’s remit includes providing advice to Council on the NHMRC work program for the identification of gaps in evidence uptake in clinical practice, the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines and other forms of evidence-based clinical advice, and the quality and safety of health care.
The functions of HCC, as gazetted by the Minister in March 2009, are:
- to provide the NHMRC with advice on clinical matters in health;
- such other functions as the Minister from time to time determines in writing after consulting the CEO; and
- any other functions conferred on the Committee by the NHMRC Act, the regulations or any other law.
Membership
The composition of HCC is not defined under the NHMRC Act. HCC has 16 members for the 2009-12 triennium, including persons with backgrounds in evidence-based health care; consumer advocacy; nursing; clinical research; Indigenous health; and health economics.
A member of AHEC also sits on HCC - this is a requirement of the NHMRC Act.
